Samuel Medley, the author of the hymn, was originally a sailor before he turned to a life of ministry. He wrote many hymns throughout his life, but "I Know that My Redeemer Lives" remains one of his most well-known and enduring works.

The hymn is rooted in the Book of Job, specifically Job 19:25:
