Praise. My Soul. the King Of Heaven - Hymn with Lyrics

1. Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
to his feet your tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
evermore his praises sing.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise the everlasting King!

2. Praise him for his grace and favor
to his people in distress.
Praise him, still the same as ever,
slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Glorious in his faithfulness!

3. Fatherlike he tends and spares us;
well our feeble frame he knows.
In his hand he gently bears us,
rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Widely yet his mercy flows!

4. Angels, help us to adore him;
you behold him face to face.
Sun and moon, bow down before him,
dwellers all in time and space.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise with us the God of grace!

Scripture; Exodus 15:1-21; Numbers 14:18; Deuteronomy 1:31

“Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” is a classic hymn of praise written by Henry Francis Lyte in 1834. It is based on Psalm 103, which calls on the soul to bless and praise God for His mercy, love, and faithfulness. Lyte was an Anglican minister and hymn writer known for his deep devotion and lyrical ability to capture biblical themes in poetic form. This hymn is among his best-known works, alongside “Abide With Me.”

Background and Inspiration

Lyte wrote “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” while he was serving as vicar at All Saints Church in Lower Brixham, a small fishing village in Devon, England. His work was often focused on connecting the people of his parish to a deeper understanding of God’s grace and compassion. Inspired by Psalm 103, he crafted the hymn to mirror the psalmist’s outpouring of praise and gratitude toward God, especially for His steadfast love and mercy.

Psalm 103 is a hymn of thanksgiving that reflects on God’s forgiveness, healing, and care for His people. In it, King David encourages his soul to remember all that God has done and to respond in gratitude. Lyte took this theme of heartfelt praise and set it to words that would resonate in Christian worship, encouraging worshipers to recognize God’s goodness and faithfulness in their own lives.
