We Praise Thee, O God, our Redeemer, Creator - Hymn with Lyrics

1. We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator;
in grateful devotion our tribute we bring;
we lay it before you; we kneel and adore you;
we bless your holy name: glad praises we sing.

2. We worship you, God of our fathers and mothers;
through life's storm and tempest our guide you have been;
when perils o'ertake us, you never forsake us,
and with your help, O Lord, our battles we win.

3. With voices united our praises we offer,
our songs of thanksgiving to you we now raise;
your strong arm will guide us, our God is beside us,
to you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise!

"We Praise Thee, O God, Our Redeemer, Creator" is a beloved hymn that has inspired congregations since its creation, celebrated for its message of gratitude, devotion, and reverence toward God. Written by Julia Cady Cory in 1902, this hymn was originally composed for a Thanksgiving service. Julia was only 22 years old when she penned the lyrics, adapting the theme of thankfulness from the popular hymn "We Gather Together," which had a similar melody and had become a traditional Thanksgiving hymn in the Netherlands.

Background and Composition

The original melody, known as Kremser, is a Dutch folk tune that had long been associated with thanksgiving and harvest themes in Dutch culture. Julia Cory was asked by the pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City to create new, English-language lyrics to pair with the traditional tune. She composed "We Praise Thee, O God, Our Redeemer, Creator" as an expression of gratitude, faith, and worship, with lyrics emphasizing God’s role as both Redeemer and Creator.
